Was this other battery charged?

Is there any signs of power - is the engine turning or just not starting. What about the curtesy lights etc

Are all the leads reconnected to the battery terminals?

Disconnect the new battery, wait 5 minutes, re-connect. Maybe the immobiliser has got out of sync.

Just answered my question by doing a 'relay 30' search  , however can some one tell me, does this relay exist in my TDI if so what is it called and are the expected symptons identical to petrol engines?

Relay 30 is for petrol engines, diesels use R3 supply relay or relay 90 same thing different numbers, which is plum in the middle of the fuse box under the steering wheel. Symptoms are the same as petrol; engine will turn over but won't start, and then will start run for a while then turn itself off for no reason. Should cost you about
